ABOUT THE PROJECT
Improving Communications wanted an update to the website as it was feeling a bit dated and it also wasn’t responsive – meaning the size of the site did not adjust to the width of the device it was being viewed on. In early 2018, Google began penalizing sites that were not responsive especially in mobile searches which could really hurt sales for a business but especially of brick-and-mortar businesses.
When we started the project, I was given the new business plan and I just loved the opening sentence: Effective Communication is Empowering. I knew it was going to be at the top of the site. I was playing around with quick pencil sketches in my notebook when I remembered the owner mentioning he loved contrast. One thing we kept from the prior design was the logo which is black and white. That little logo sparked a big idea.
Playing off the logo, the site uses essentially three colors – black, white and the contrasting teal color for calls to action and links. I went for stronger typography since his clients are generally other business looking for help with their communication and to really convey a feeling of empowerment.
